Last Rites Held for Sidney Hartley

Sidney Hartley, 83, a former resident of Allamakee county who had been living in Dubuque, died at the American Health Care Center on Tuesday, August 19. He had formerly lived with his wife at 689 Peru Road.

He was born in French Creek twp. in 1896. His parents were John W. and Nora Pierce Hartley. He was educated in the local schools and was a veteran of World War I, serving in the Navy.

He married Mabel F. Shefelbine on September 14, 1920. They farmed in Allamakee county for a time, moving to Dubuque, where he was founder and owner of Excel Photo Service until his retirement.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 6 for 44 years, the VFW, and the Immanuel United Church of Christ.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel, two sons, Lester Jr. and Milton R., both of Dubuque; five grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Del (Malnora) Mosher of Fort Meyers, Florida. Deceased is an infant son. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Louis, and several half brothers and half sisters.

Funeral services were held on August 21 at the Egelhof-Caeper-Strueber Funeral Home at 2 p. m., with burial in Linwood Cemetery. Military services were conducted by the Dubuque American Legion Post No. 6.

Relatives from the Waukon and New Albin areas attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hartley, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Howes, Mrs. George (Vienna) Shefelbine, Mr. Charles Hartley and son Joe, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Monserud of Waterville, and Richard Howes of Des Moines.
