Postville Herald, Thur., 9 Feb. 1933. (condensed).

John Lawence Lien, the son of Halvor H. and Jane A. Lien, was born in Postville, 5 March 1898, and died in Chicago, Ill., 6 Feb. 1933. He graduated from Postville high school and immediately undertook such activities as eventually earned an unusually high place for him in the business world.

Endowed with a singing voice of rare quality he took two years of Voice Culture in New York City, then joined an English opera company and traveled on a 26 thousand mile tour of Canadian cities.

But his mental and physical makeup demanded a more constructive field and he joined the Barrett Company with the state of Iowa as his territory. He rose steadily within the company becoming the sales manager of the Chicago district, the position he held at his death. He gained a wide acquaintance in important business circles extending beyond the bounds of the field of 26 states in which he operated. He had been living at Chicago's Corydon Hotel, where his mother had also been living.

His insistent tendency to labor without rest aggravated a growing condition of high blood pressure which resulted in his death by cerebral hemorrhage.

He is survived by his mother, and a brother, Rodney of Waterloo. Also, his fiancee, Miss Florence Andrees. The mother will now live with her remaining son in Waterloo, Iowa.

A combined church and Masonic service will be held at the Postville Presbyterian church, Rev. R. F. Galloway and Grant Bollman of Decorah officiating. Burial will be in the Postville cemetery beside his father.
