John William Hammond, eldest son of Hiram and Margaret Eva Hammond, was born in Garnavillo, Iowa, 26 May 1863, and died at his home in Postville, Iowa, Thursday, 7 May 1931,aged 67 years, 11 months and 12 days.

He grew to manhood on the farm of his birth. In 1885 he moved with his parents to the old Henderson farm on Henderson Prairie, living there until 2 Apr. 1890, when he was married to Miss Elizabeth Willman of Postville, Iowa. To this Union six children were born, two of whom died in infancy.

After farming the home place for two years, Mr. and Mrs. Hammond moved to Monona, Iowa, where they lived for 18 years. After the death of his mother in 1910, they moved to the farm near Postville. There they farmed successfully until 4 1/2 years ago when they moved to Postville, where with his son, Paul, Mr. Hammond engaged in the oil and gasoline business.

John Hammond was of a quiet, kindly disposition, never complaining and a steady worker. He loved hunting and fishing. He was well known for miles around and leaves many friends to mourn his death.

Of his immediate family he leaves his wife, Elizabeth; three sons, Charles of Fayette; Roy of Forest Mills and Paul of Postville; one daughter, Mrs. Elmer Eberling of Postville; two sisters, Mrs. Matilda Thoma of Clayton and Mrs. John Moetsch of Postville; one brother, George of California; and two grandchildren.
