Postville Review, Fri., 26 June 1903.

Eliza Gay-Holmes was born in Putnam county, N.Y., May 30, 1809. She was married to Isaac Holmes in 1832. To them were born seven children, one died in early childhood and and [one] gave up his life as a soldier during the Civil War. The five children who survive her are Mrs. King, of Richland Center, Wis.; Mrs Likely, Texas Creek, Col.; Mrs. Coyle, Postville, Iowa; William Holmes, Denver, Col., and Albert Holmes, of Avoca, Wis. There are 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

In 1843 she removed from New York to Ohio, and in 1855 to Wisconsin, where she resided until she came to Postville five years after the death of her husband. Here she has spent the last ten years of her life, making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Coyle. She has been in failing health through the spring months and passed quietly away Wednesday morning June 24, 1903.

The remains were shipped Thursday night to Avoca, Wis., for interment beside those of her husband.
