Hazel Schlake

Funeral services for Hazel Schlake were held Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. James Allison officiated. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Bernie Martins, Virgil Martins, Lew Schrandt, Roger Radloff, Lynn Reiners and Glenn Block.

Hazel Marea (Meyer) Schlake, the daughter of Otto and Mary Christena (Kregel) Meyer, was born June 14, 1916, in Jefferson Township, Clayton County, near Guttenberg, Iowa. She passed away Thursday, January 31, 2002 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 5 months, and 17 days.

She was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant. On April 13, 1930 she was confirmed by the Rev. Emil Lehne in St. John Lutheran Church at Guttenberg, Iowa. Hazel attended a rural school near her home.

Hazel was married to Leighton Henry Schlake on October 24, 1934 in St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, Iowa. They became the parents of two children. The couple farmed in the Guttenberg and Postville, Iowa areas. They retired and moved to Postville. Hazel became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on October 10, 2001.

Hazel was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA. She enjoyed visiting with her friends and attending the Wednesday morning breakfast group who met at a local restaurant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leighton, who died March 5, 1996, 3 brothers, Clarence, Walter and Albert Meyer, who died in infancy, and 2 sisters, Leola Duwe, and Amanda, who died in infancy.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary (Carroll) Kamin of Milford, Illinois and a son, Dennis (Linda) Schlake of Montrose, Colorado; 2 grandchildren, Brenda (Lynn) Reiners and Dawn (Glenn) Block; 3 step-grandchildren, Rachel Westerberg, Brian Westerberg, and Wendy Schwartz; 3 great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie and McKenzie Reiners; and 2 sisters, Marie Baltz of Postville, Iowa and Florence Bierbaum of Garnavillo, Iowa.
