Melanie S. Sanderson, 14, of Waukon, died Tues., March 13, 2001, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, following a sudden illness.

Funeral services were held Fri., March 16 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe and Rev. David E. Schafer officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Melanie Sue Sanderson was born June 8, 1986, in Waukon, the daughter of David and Wendy (Hill) Sanderson. She was baptized at Veterans Memorial Hospital by Rev. Lynn Groe. Melanie was currently an eighth grade student at Waukon Jr. High School, where she participated in chorus. She has been an active member at St. John's Lutheran, where she sang in choir, enjoyed going to Sunday school, and was currently in the confirmation program. She was also formerly active in the Waukon Girl Scout program. Melanie loved to be around people and to tease them, and enjoyed having them tease her back. She was a happy and cheerful girl despite having had many surgeries and health problems. She looked forward to family gatherings where cards and board games were played, and she enjoyed eating chocolate chip cookies and watching movies with her brother.

Melanie is survived by her parents, David and Wendy Sanderson; her brother, Michael; her maternal grandparents, Howard and Betty Hill, and her paternal grandparents, Sandy and Elsie Sanderson, all of Waukon; and a step-great-grandfather. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Casket bearers were Dennis and Alan Sanderson, John Vanis, Bruce Tointon, Jim Petska, Ron and Marvin Hill, Dean Anfinson, Randy Kruse, Jerry Lestina, and David Grindstaff.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
