Velma Block

Funeral services for Velma Block were held Wednesday, December 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Robert Hupp officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Velma Mary Block, the daughter of August and Caroline "Lena" (Diedrichs) Schutte, was born May 14, 1912, in Winneshiek County, east of Castalia, Iowa. She died Saturday, December 4, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jack (Janet) Jarmes, at Muskego, Wisconsin. She had reached the age of 86 years, 6 months and 21 days.

She was baptized June 25, 1912, and confirmed July 12, 1925. Velma attended the Bloomfield Township School No. 7 near Castalia.

On September 16, 1931, Velma was married to Emil Block at Postville, Iowa. To this union 2 daughters were born, Margorie, who died in infancy, and Janet. Velma had lived in Winneshiek County from the time of her birth until her marriage in 1931. Following her marriage, the couple lived in Clayton County until 1955. Velma and Emil were divorced and Velma went to Monona to live where she was employed as a waitress. She moved to Postville in 1959 where she worked for over 23 years for Koevenig's Variety Store, later known as Hanson's Variety Store. In August of 1993 Velma went to live with her daughter Janet (Jack) Jarmes, in Muskego, Wisconsin.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a twin brother and sister who died in infancy, brothers Elmer Schutte, Helmuth Schutte, and her twin brother, Walter Schutte; sisters, Amanda (Walter) Sander and Florence (Otto) Miene, brothers-in-law, Fred Miene, Walter Sander, and a sister-in-law, Marie (Elmer) Schutte.

Surviving are her daughter, Janet (Jack) Jarmes of Muskego, Wisconsin, 2 grandsons, Joel (Kathy) Jarmes of Milwaukee, WI, Jeffrey L. Jarmes of Chicago, IL, and one granddaughter, Jill (Greg) Gardetto of Eagle, WI; 3 great grandchildren, Taylor and Ryan Jarmes and Kylie Gardetto; one sister, Marie (Fred) Miene of Monona, IA; sisters-in-law, Esther (Walter) Schutte of Clermont, IA and Amanda (Helmuth) Schutte, of Postville, a brother-in-law, Otto Miene, also of Postville, and many nieces and nephews.

Velma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and an Honor Roll Member of the Women of the ELCA. She was active in the Women's association and helped to make many of the quilts that were sent to missions. She also became an associate member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Muskego.

Casket bearers were Joel and Jeff Jarmes, Greg Gardetto, Eugene and Leonard Schutte, Paul Miene, and Wayne Sander, D.V.M.
