Postville Review, Fri., 9 June 1916.

Edward Charles Cardwick was born February 16, 1888, and died June (date unreadable), 1916, aged 28 years, one month and 16 days, He lived in and near Postville all his life. He was married to Lottie Gress, December 11, 1912. He leaves a wife and daughter to mourn his loss, and a half-sister and a half-brother to mourn his loss.

Last Saturday afternoon Ed Carwick, of this city, started for Waters Bros. farm with a load of plank to repair a bridge in that vicinity, driving a span of mules formerly owned by J. A. Spaugy, the butcher. About an hour later Mrs. Louis Heckman, living a quarter mile east of the Minert school house on the Bethel road, saw the team passing their home without a driver.. She at once started up the road in the direction the team had come, and about half-way between the Minert corner and her home she found the lifeless body of Mr. Carwick lying on the bank about ten or twelve feet off the highway. She at once returned home and notified her neighbor, Chris Meier, and he at once called Dr. Schmidt, who hurried to the scene and found life extinct. He at once returned to town and notified undertaker Harris, who went down and brought the body to town to prepare it for burial. An examination of the body disclosed a broken neck, a hole under the chin, two broken ribs and bruises across the chest.

A broken bit indicates the team perhaps became unmanageable and in some manner threw him off the load with results as above stated. As no other vehicle or person had been seen in that locality until after the finding of the body it is a resonable presumption death was accidental, there being nothing to indicate or any reason to suspect foul play.

Deceased was a quiet and industrious young man of good repute and many are the expressions of sympathy at his untimely passing. He was a member of the local lodge M.B.A. in which he held a beneficiary certificate for $1000.

The funeral was held from the M.E. church Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. P. M. Phillips. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
