Daniel J. Whalen Called in Death

For the second time a few months death has entered the Julia Whalen home at Lycurgus, each time taking a young man in the prime of life. The last one to be taken was her son, Daniel J., who was stricken with a heart attack at Waterford, Wis., a suburb of Milwaukee, and died in a short time after being taken to a hospital.

He was the eldest son of Mrs. Whalen and was born at the family home near Lycurgus, December 6, 1880*, and was in his 50th year. His younger days were spent on the farm, later going to La Crosse, where he engaged in business. A few years ago he disposed of his business interests there and went to Milwaukee, where he had been a traveling salesman for a number of years.

Deceased, who was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters, was an exemplary young man, and his sudden death brings grief to his many friends.

The funeral was held Saturday morning from St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. E. J. Dougherty, Cresco, and Rev. John C. Stuart, Waukon, assisted Rev. P. H. McNamara of Lycurgus, with the services. Rev. Stuart delivered a consoling sermon to the bereaved ones.

Edward Teeling, John Riley, Thomas Norton and Anton O’Donnell, Lycurgus, and two friends, A. E. Englehardt and J. E. McNamara, Milwaukee, were the pall bearers.

Besides his mother he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Peter Welch, Mrs. Pat McCauley, and Miss Angella Whalen, and four brothers, Peter, New Albin, Charles, Frank, and William, Lycurgus. The Democrat joins with many friends of the family in extending heartfelt sympathy to those who mourn.

(From the Waukon Democrat, as mentioned in the last sentence.)

Note by Matthew Whalen: Daniel Joseph Whalen (6 December 1879 (*not 1880…he is in the 1880 Federal Census) died on June 11, 1930. He was the son of Patrick and Julia Regan Whalen. His surviving siblings would have been Hanora Whalen McCauley (Mrs. Patrick McCauley), William Thomas Whalen, Mary Elizabeth Whalen (Mrs. Peter Welch), Peter Augustine Whalen, Charles (Charley) Whalen, Francis (Frank) Whalen, and Angella Whalen (later Mrs. James (Jimmy) Ronan). The other deceased brother referred to in the first sentence was Fr. James Whalen, who died 31 Oct, 1929.
