Walter Troendle, age 82, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at his home. Graveside funeral services were held Monday, July 14 at Gullion Cemetery in rural Attica, Iowa. Military honors were provided by American Legion Baty-Tucker Post #168 and VFW John Myers Post #3519. Pastor Leo Freel officiated. Bybee & Davis Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements. Walter B. Troendle was born April 4, 1921, in Waukon, the son of Ben and Gertrude (Haas) Troendle. He was raised in the Waukon area. Following high school, he lived in California before entering the service. Walter served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On November 28, 1948 he was united in marriage to Sarah "Sadie" Joy. The couple lived in Seattle and Walter worked for Lockhead. They left Seattle and moved to Altoona, where they lived for six years. Walter and Sarah then moved to Waukon, where they resided until moving to Knoxville in 1988. While living in Waukon, Walter worked for West Side Lumber until his retirement in 1983. Walter enjoyed flying and owned his own plane for several years. He was also interested in polishing rocks, which he used to make belt buckles and ties. He was a member of the American Legion. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife Sadie; and grandson Bradley Lee Troendle. Those left to honor his memory include his son, Dave Troendle of Knoxville; three daughters: Joy Hol of Pella and Arlene Ensor and Susan Irving, both of Knoxville; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Ray Troendle of Church; and many other family members and friends. Casketbearers were Ben Ensor, JJ Ensor, Jason Hol, Nick Hol, Dylan Irving, and Scott Troendle. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pella Regional Health Center Dialysis Unit.
