Postville Herald, Thur., Feb. 3, 1921.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.After an illness of nineteen months from hardening of the arteries, one of Postville's oldest and best known business men, Godfrey Staadt, passed away at his home in this city at 8:30 o'clock Monday evening, February first, and his pain racked body and wearied spirit are at rest.
Godfrey Staadt, Postville's well known druggist, was born in Post township, Allamakee county, Iowa, February 21, 1857, and at the time of his demise was aged within a few weeks of sixty-four years.
After acquiring an education in the public schools of Post township and Postville, Godfrey, at the age of sixteen years, began his independent career, joining his father as a partner in the drug business in this city. He retained this connection until after his father's death, when he assumed entire charge of the enterprise, which he has since conducted alone, and in the conduct of which he was very successful.
He was a stockholder in both the Postville State and Citizens State Bank, and for years was a member of the board of directors in the institution first named. He was also a share holder in the Postville Clay Products Co. and owner of a fine farm in Clayton county.
He was a man of strict integrity, honorable and upright in all his dealings and as industrious as the day was long. He was a man who never sought public office, although when called upon to fill some office he gave to the public the same faithful service as his own private business. He served for one term as a member of the town council, for 34 continuous years he was secretary of the school board and for more than seventeen years was clerk of the Modern Woodmen lodge, withdrawing from the two positions last named when failing health demanded that he must lessen his labors to the minimum.
Fraternally Mr. Staadt was connected with the Masonic fraternity, being one of the oldest members of Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204 A.F. & A.M., and of Oak Camp No. 328, M.W.A.
He was also a member of the Postville Turner Society and the Postville Maennerchor Society.
Mr. Staadt married on the 9th of February, 1893, Miss Anna Welzel, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Welzel, and to them were born four children, Anthony, Pauline, Edward and Catherine, all of whom save the eldest survive, Anthony giving his life for his country during the World War, having died at Berkley, Calif., Nov. 2, 1918.
Godfrey Staadt was a good citizen, neighbor and friend, and in the sad hour of bereavement the tenderest sympathies of the people to whom Mr. Staadt's life has been an open book, goes out in fullest measure to those who mourn the loss of a loving husband and indulgent father.
The funeral will be held from the family home at two o'clock Friday afternoon February 4th, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, Brother Charles E. Scholz of Guttenberg conducting the service for the local lodge. Interment will be made in Postville cemetery.
