Postville Herald, Thur., July 4, 1935.

Dr. Ed Schroeder In Fatal Accident Saturday Evening. Deceased Was Veterinarian Here For Many Years; Funeral Tuesday.

E. H. Shroeder of this city, the well known veterinarian, met death in an auto accident last Saturday evening, presumably about nine o'clock. The accident occurred a little way out from the John Bray corner on the Frankville road, where his car struck a large rock on the end of a culvert and overturned, landing about six feet below in a ditch, bottom side up, and then caught fire and burned, consuming everything flammable about the car, and Mr. Shroeder being pinned beneath the wreckage was burned to death. The accident was discovered by an auto load of six young men from Frankville enroute to Postville about 11 o'clock, who immediately notified Sheriff John King of Waukon, who in turn called undertaker Louis Schutte of this city at about midnight, asking him to go out and pick up the body, which he did, although it was burned so badly it could not be identified.

Edward Harman Schroeder was born at Ceres, in Clayton county, March 2, 1863, and at the time of his death was aged 72 years, 3 months and 27 days. He was confirmed in the Ceres church of which his father was a charter member.

January 5, 1887, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Clair of his home locality and to this union were born five daughters and a son, all of whom survive and were present at the funeral, as follows: Mrs. Gertrude Widman and Mrs. Jessie Kossack, of McGregor; Mrs. Florence Palmer of Decorah; Mrs. Josephine Laughlin of Blabon, North Dakota; Mrs. Edna Hargraves of Waterloo, and Allen of Plum City, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Shroeder passed away some years ago.

After leaving their farm east of Postville, the family located for two years at Lime Springs, from whence they returned to Postville close to 40 years ago, and this has been the family home since.

Mr. Shroeder was a practicing veterinarian in this locality for many years and had a wide acquaintance, and friends will learn of his passing with sorrow and extend tenderest sympathy to the sorrowing family.

Fraternally Mr. Shroeder was affiliated with Noble Lodge No. 51, A.O.U.W., of which he was a beneficiary member.

The funeral was held from the Schutte funeral home at 1:30 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. R. F. Galloway of the Community Presbyterian church officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery at Garnavillo by the side of his wife.
