Bernhard Frederick Schroeder was born July 7, 1853, in Cincinnatti, Ohio. While still quite young he came with his parents and located at Guttenberg, Iowa. He was married December 28, 1875, to Miss Caroline Louise Overbeck. This union was blessed with eight children, two sons and six daughters, one son preceding the father in death. In 1877 he moved with his family to a farm near Luana, where he lived until 1890, when they located on a farm two miles south of Postville. In 1909 he retired and moved to town. He was physically a strong man up to about two years ago, when he became ill and never regained his former usual health. He had tried the best physicians of Rochester, Chicago and other places without avail, and on Sunday morning, July 1st, God called him home where his sufferings shall be no more. He was aged 63 years, 11 months and 25 days.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and for several years was president of the congregation.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church on Thursday and was one of the largest ever held here. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Interment in Postville cemetery.

With the wife the following children mourn the loss of a kind loving husband and father: Mrs. W. A. Meyer, Castalia; John A. Schroeder and Mrs. C. G. Welzel, near Postville; Mrs. Edmund Knodt, Coates, Minnesota; Emilie Schroeder, at home; Mrs. Albert Gulsvig, Gunder; and Miss Louise at home, who so faithfully and lovingly cared for her father during his long suffering.

Schroeder and daughter Ethel, Allen, Neb.; Fred Kruger, daughter minnie and son John, Spencer, S.D.; Ralph Alker, Sioux City; Henry Knodt, St. Paul, Minn.; Austin Gulsvig, St. Olaf; and relatives and friends from Guttenberg, Clayton, Garnavillo, Elkader, Monona, Fort Dodge, West Union and Luana.
