Wm. J. Clark, 77, Former Mayor Here, Passes On Monday.

William J. Clark, 77, former mayor of Postville and active in civic and community affairs for many years, passed away Tuesday morning at nine o'clock in Postville hospital where he had been a patient for the past two weeks. Mr. Clark was stricken ill while assisting at the Big-Four fair last fall and did not recover from that illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Bridget's Catholic church with the Rev. Frances J. Vallaster officiating. Interment will be in the cemetery at Clermont.

Mr. Clark was born in Grand Meadow township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Clark, March 27, 1867, and was married to Anne Fitzgerald of Clermont on April 4, 1893. The couple observed their golden wedding April 4, 1943 in Postville.

Mr. Clark farmed in Grand Meadow township until 1908, when the family moved to Postville which has been their home since. He worked at the Farmers Store for eight years and in the Hub clothing store for Keith Gray and later for J. T. Melvold for ten years.

Mr. Clark served as mayor of Postville for four years; for the past 10 years he was local representative and director for the Winneshiek Fire and Lightning Insurance Co., and for the Iowa Mutual Tornado Insurance Co. He also was chairman of the Allamakee county inheritance board and of the county social welfare board, and had been active in many local civic organizations.

He is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. (Ethel) Henry V. Steele of Postville, Mrs. (Irene) R. E. Bernhardt of Everly and Dr. Thomas D. Clark of Victor. One daughter, Mabel, passed away in infancy. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Marjory Ann, Thomas B., and Mary Sue Clark of Victor, and Robert Bernhardt of Everly.
