Davis Clair was born in Pennsylvania, Feb. 2, 1839. In early boyhood he moved with his parents to Lena, Ill., where he grew to manhood. In 1857 he was married to Phoebe Crosby, who died in 1906. He served his country as a private in the Civil War, enlisting at Lena, Ill., Aug. 9, 1862, in Co. G, Regt. 92, Ill., being honorably discharged at Franklin, Tenn., in the summer of 1863, for disability.

He was a citizen of this town for 38 years, during which time he served for many years on the school board. For the past five years he has made his home in Postville, Iowa.

After a brief illness of a weeks duration, surrounded by his children and two old Army commrades, he passed peacefully to his well-earned rest on Dec. 27, 1913. He was the farther of six children, two of whom died in infancy. There are left to mourn a kind and gentle father, one son, Charles Clair, of this place, and three daughters, Mrs. Cora Kramer of McGregor, Mrs. Lizzie Schroeder and Mrs. Mabel Kleckner of Postville, also twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. K. Wm. Brann, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational church in this city.--Garnavillo Tribune.
