Final Rites For Carl J. Martins Are Held Monday.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Schutte Funeral Home for Carl John Martens, 81, who passed away at Decorah hospital June 30. The services were in charge of Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial was in Postville cemetery.

Born In Germany.

Carl John Martens, son of Carl Martens and Marie Albright Martens, was born March 26, 1868, near Berlin, Germany, and departed this life June 30, 1949 at Decorah, aged 81 years.

Mr. Martens spent the earlier years of his life in his native Germany. He received his formal education in Berlin. At the age of 17 he came to the United States and settled in the Postville vicinity. He has made his home in this country since. After making his home in Lansing for the preceding five years, Mr. Martens in February of this year came to make his home with his son, John and family at Ossian. While there he became Ill and was removed to the Decorah Hospital where, after a stay of nine days, he departed this life.

Mr. Martens was married twice. He was united in marriage with Louise Schnear in December 1897 at Postville. To this union three children were born, two of whom survive the passing of their father. Mrs. Martens preceded her husband in death, departing this life in the year 1908.

He then was united in Marriage with Ella Mecklenburg on January 3, 1910 at Elkader. To this union eight children were born, five of whom survive the passing of their father, Mrs. Martens preceded her husband in death, departing this life on March 20, 1943.

Left to mourn his passing are two children of his first marriage: Walter of Houston, Texas, and Melinda of Milford, Michigan; five children of his second marriage: John of Ossian, Harvey, of Ossian, Harlan, of Waterloo, Dillis (Mrs. Herb Sess) of Lansing, and Leonard, of Riceville; one brother, Fred, of Waukon; two sisters: Annie Reifsteckal, of Oelwein, and Minnie Barr, of Elgin and 16 grandchildren.

Mr. Martens was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; one son, Wilber, of his first marriage; one daughter and two sons of his second marriage, namely, Edith, Harley, and Carl; and one sister, Bertha Bartel.
