Rites Held For Elmer Brainard

Elmer L. Brainard, the son of Reuben [Joel John] and Minnie (Schroeder) Brainard, was born in Postville on October 4, 1897. He was baptized in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on November 28, 1897 and confirmed on April 14, 1946. He died at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, on December 9, 1964, following a brief illness, at the age of 67 years, 2 months and 5 days.

He was married to Elsie Schave on November 27, 1935. To this union were born one son and two daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leo of Monona, and one brother in infancy.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Kenneth, of Des Moines; 2 daughters, Lorraine, Mrs. LaVerne Ayers of McGregor and Kay of Muscatine; 7 grandchildren; 4 brothers, Carl of Volga, James of Troy, Michigan, Lloyd of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Lester of Castalia; 2 sisters, Mabel, Mrs. Theodore Klepper of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin and Mrs. Hazel Knapp of Sabula, Iowa.

Elmer farmed in the Postville area until 1955, and moved to town in 1957. Since that time he worked at the Packing Plant in Postville for 7 years. He has been living in Des Moines for the past 4 months.

Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on Saturday, December 12, at 1:30 p.m. Interment was in the Minert Cemetery with The Rev. Charles E. Witt, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, officiating.
