John McKernan Was Lifelong Resident Here.

John McKernan, whose passing we briefly reported last week, was born in Bloomfield township, Winneshiek county, March 3, 1860, and passed away in Postville on last week Tuesday, aged 73 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Mr. McKernan was married to Susan Schnabel at Ionia, Michigan, on May 9, 1900, and the couple immediately came to Bloomfield township to farm., living there fifteen years and then moved to Postville where they have since lived.

He is survived by his widow, his brother, Thomas, of Hibbing, Minn., and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Murphy of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Julia Croak of San francisco, Calif., as well as by several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. P. Hogan at St. Bridget's church last Thursday morning and interment was in the Ossian Chatholic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ed. McNeil, Dan McNeil, Jr., A. J. Schuler, J. E. Hogan, J. W. Steele and Tim Foley.

Mr. McKernan was an honest and upright man and all who came in contact with him loved him for his cheery disposition and ready wit. He was of the rugged pioneer stock which had so great a part in settling this section of the state and helped build it into the progressive community it is now.
