Mrs. George W. Hanks.

Following a few weeks period of failing health Mrs. M. A. Hanks passed to her reward about 3:30 last Sunday afternoon at the home of her son, W. J. Hanks, from no specific ailment other than the frailities incident to age.

Mary Ann Bannister was born in Chautauqua County, New York, on the 15th day of September, 1834. In that eastern state the days of childhood and girlhood were spent, and there, in 1857, she was married to George W. Hanks. Two years later the young couple gave heed to Horace Greeley's advice, as many others in those eastern states did, and came west, locating on a farm in this vicinity, and meeting and overcoming the hardships of pioneer life. In 1891 the husband was taken from her side and it was then Mrs. Hanks left the farm to spend the remainder of her years in Postville.

For many years Mrs. Hanks was actively connected with the W. C. T. U., giving freely of her time and energies to further the cause of that organization.

Ever since coming to this community, sixty-three years ago, Mrs. Hanks was interested in and actively connected with the work of the church, an interest which she retained and an activity she continued until the very end.

During the past autumn and winter Mrs. Hanks left the house only about once a week and that was to go to church. "As long as I'm here I'm going to do my duty," she often said. The church has sustained a great loss through her passing.

Mrs. Hanks leaves of immediate relatives one son, W. J. Hanks, who is really an adopted son, coming into her home a helpless, motherless infant, to whom she gave a mother's care and a mother's love, and who with his wife and two sons and other more distant relatives, and a host of friends mourn her passing. She passes hence at the ripe old age of eighty-seven years, four months and twenty-eight days.

May she peacefully rest from her labors of a long life of awaiting the resurrection day.

The funeral was held from the home at 10:30 Tuesday morning, conducted by the Rev. J. A. Saathoff. Interment in Postville cemetery.

In this connection the family wish to extend their heartfelt and sincere thanks to the neighbors and friends for their kindly assistance and sympathy during the illness and burial of their beloved mother.
