Postville Herald, Postville, Iowa, Thursday, March 03, 1927.
---------------

Sophia Grunwaldt was born in Grosgoehren, Mecklenburg - Schwerin, Germany, in 1850. She came to Postville with her mother and brother, Henry Schroeder, in 1863. She was married to Wilhelm Thoma in 1869. To this union eleven children were born, five of whom preceded her in death; those surviving are John C. Thoma of Luana, Conrad of Minneapolis, Fred of Milwaukee, Louis, Edward, and Clara (Mrs. Howard Gordon) all of Postville. The husband and father died in 1903.

Mrs. Thoma passed into eternal rest at her home in this city on Monday, January 24, 1927, aged seventy-seven years.

Mrs. Thoma was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church of this city and a charter member of the Ladies Aid Society of that church.

The above is in brief the story of a woman whose life for sixty - four years has been an open book to the people of this city and community. She was a good wife, fond mother and faithful friend, ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in sickness and distress, and whose many kindly acts will be recalled by not a few.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church last Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. E.T. Finck, and the many friends from far and near who assembled to pay a last tribute of respect to her memory and the beautiful offerings all testified to the high place she held in the hearts of a people who had known and appreciated her during the more than half century she had lived in their midst.

Interment was made in the family plot in Postville cemetery.
