Pioneer Mother Passes At Luana. Mrs. Minna Schultz Resided Here For 80 Years.

Mrs. Minna Schultz, 88, passed away early Tuesday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Overbeck, in Luana. Mrs. Shultz was the oldest member of St. Paul's Lutheran church congregation in Postville as well as one of the two surviving charter members of the Ladies' Aid Society of that church.

Although she had been in ill health for several years, she was able to be up and around until Thanksgiving day when her condition became serious.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Overbeck home in Luana Thursday at 1 p.m., with later services in the Lutheran church in Postville at 1:30 o'clock. The Rev. F.R. Ludwig will officiate and burial will be in the Postville cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ben W. Lange, John Renzman and Kenneth Schultz of Postville, Kieth Overbeck an Frederick Overbeck of Luana, and Ed. Bauder of Elgin.

As Minna Freitag she was born on July 25, 1851, in the province of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, in the village of Gross-Schmoellen, Germany, the daughter of John Freitag and Katherina Dawes Freitag. At the age of seven she came with her parents to the United States, landing at New York City. They came west to Chicago and Dunlieth (East Dubuque) by train, then by steamboat to Guttenberg. The family finally arrived at their destination south of Postville after a trip by team to the farm now owned by Mrs. Anna Schultz. A few years later they moved to the Judge Williams farm, now owned by Victor Williams.

On January 30, 1874, Miss Freitag and Fred S, Bauder were married at Elgin. He passed away in October of 1876. She was married a second time on February 28, 1878, to Henry Schultz who passed away May 25, 1891.

Mr. and Mrs. Schultz lived on various farms in the vicinity of Postville, then in 1885 they moved to town and Mrs. Schultz continued to reside here after the death of her husband. On April 18, 1923, she moved to Luana to live with her daughter, Mrs. Overbeck.

She is survived by five children: Alfred Schultz of Postville, Mrs. Ben F. Overbeck of Luana, Otto C. Schultz of St. Louis, Mo., John Schultz of Austin, Minn., and Fred S. Bauder of Des Moines. Two children of her second marriage preceded her in death.

Mrs. Schultz is also survived by two brothers, Henry Freitag of Postville, and John Freitag of Burlington, N.D., six grandchildren, Frederick Bauder of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. John Wistrick of Elkader, Donald J. Overbeck of La Motte, Frederick and Kieth Overbeck of Luana, Mary Margaret Schultz of St. Louis, Mo., and five great-grandchildren, Karen and Buddy Bauder of St. Louis, Mo., Bruce Frederick Wistrick of Elkader, and Kay Francis and Jean Ann Overbeck of La Motte.
