Mrs. John Casten Passes Away Friday; Funeral Held Tuesday.

Had been Resident Here Since Early Childhood; Came To Postville In 1921.

Mrs. John Casten, Sr., a resident of this community the greater portion of her life, passed away at her home in this city Friday evening following an illness of three and one-half months. She was aged 79 years, 9 months and 2 days.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating and burial was in Postville Cemetery.

As Mary Magdelena Knodt, Mrs. Casten was born near Clayton Center June 22, 1864, the daughter of Carl M. and Margretta Suntag Knodt.

She was married to John Casten of Postville on March 18, 1885, by the late Rev. J. Gass and to this union seven children were born, six of whom survive the passing on of their mother. Mr. and Mrs. Casten had been married for 59 years.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Casten operated a farm in Post Township for two years and then moved to the farm in Grand Meadow Township which was their home until they moved to Postville in 1921.

Mrs. Casten is survived by her husband, six children; Walter Casten, Victor Casten, Mrs. Theresia Baltz, Lorenz Casten, Leonard Casten, and John Casten, Jr., all of Postville; also eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and other relatives and friends. One son, Carl, passed away a number of years ago.

Mrs. Casten was an active member of St. Paul's Church and from the standpoint of membership, was one of the oldest members of the Ladies Aide Society of that congregation.

Coming here to attend the funeral services were the following from out of town: Miss. Mayme Knodt and William Knodt of St. Paul, Minn., Ivan VanDorn of Des Moines, Miss. Florence Casten of Rock Island, Ill., Miss. Marguerite Baltz and Dale Kennedy of Chicago, ILL., Mrs. Arthur Rupp and Mrs. Herman Schara of West Union, and Mrs. John O. Meyer of Ossian.
