C. W. Schroeder Local Banker, Interred Here

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Community Presbyterian Church for Carlton W. Schroeder, who passed away at his home following a short illness on September 6. The Reverend Walter T. Martin was in charge of the rites. Burial was in Postville cemetery. Postville veteran units participated in the service.

Carlton W. Schroeder was born on May 24, 1914 at Postville, Iowa, the son of William and Clara Wegner Schroeder. He passed away at his home in Postville on September 6, 1957 following a brief illness, at the age of 43 years.

Mr. Schroeder was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Postville. He was a graduate of Postville high school in the class of 1931, and graduated from the College of Commerce at the University of Iowa in 1935. Following his graduation, he owned and operated a men's clothing store in Postville.

He was united in marriage with Bernice Burling of Postville on August 21, 1941, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville.

In September of 1943, he was inducted into the United States Navy, and was released from active duty as an Ensign in March 1946. Upon his return from military service, he accepted a position with the Citizens State Bank, which he held until the time of his death.

He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church of Postville, Arthur F. Brandt Post of the American Legion, Postville Commercial Club, Tri-City Golf Club, Board of Directors of the Big-4 Fair, Iowa Bankers' Association, and Delta Upsilon Fraternity.

Mr. Schroeder was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife; five daughters: Jenanne, Sue Ellen, Stephanie, Emily and Barbara; his mother, Mrs. Clara Miller of Postville, and a brother, Francis Schroeder of Cloquet, Minnesota.

"...photo of Carleton Shroeder, who ran for Allamakee County Treasurer in the election of Nov. 1936. It was in an article in the Postville Herald of Oct 08, 1936, noting same. He did not evidently win as another is listed as treasurer during 1937, a republican. Nor did I see him listed anywhere as a county official thru 1940.

The obituary that is posted [above] notes the same info that was in the article listed above, same university, same college of commerce, etc., but does not mention his attempt to be county treasurer.

I feel Carlton and Carleton are one and the same person, simple misspelling of the name."
