Veteran Surveyor of Allamakee Passes
Acquaintances throughout the county of Harvey B. Miner, the veteran surveyor, were grieved to learn of his death which occurred at his home in this city [Waukon] at an early hour Tuesday morning, April 26, 1927, at the age of 87 years. He had been in a failing state of health for a number of months and he calmly sank to rest after a long and active life that was woven closely for over 70 years with the growth of Allamakee county from its pioneer days.Deceased was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, January 24, 1840, and came with his parents to this county in 1856, when he was but sixteen years of age, where he had since resided, and was regarded as one of its sturdy pioneers. On March 17, 1864, he was united in marriage with Miss Hattie Bywater of Monona. They became the parents of five children, four of whom survive, namely: Frank of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Cora Mershon, of this city; Mrs. Addie Menzies and Willis of Chicago, who are left to mourn the loss of a dear parent.
When Mr. Miner was sixteen years of age he began teaching, which occupation he followed for some years, teaching winter terms and during the summer helped clear, improve and develop his father's farm at a time when there were but three families in Linton township. His father's land was obtained by land warrant issued to soldiers of the war of 1812. He continued to reside upon this place near Ion until 1899, when he moved to Waukon, where he had since made his home.
In 1879 he was elected county surveyor and served in that office for thirty years. When this office was abolished he continued his work in a private capacity and had since been connected with important surveying projects in Allamakee and neighboring counties. In addition to holding the office of surveyor, he also served as deputy county treasurer, and in both offices he gave earnest, capable and painstaking public service.
He cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln in 1864 and had voted for every Republican presidential nominee since that time. He was active in inaugurating and shaping the agricultural developments of this county. As a private citizen and public official he was always accorded the good will and confidence of all with whom he came into contact.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Miner home, conducted by Rev. Selden of the Methodist church, of which the deceased was a devoted member. He belonged to the Masonic order and it was his request that the members attend the services in a body. Burial will be in Oakland ceemetery beside his wife who passed away January 22, 1925 - Waukon Democrat.
