John Hammel was born in Baden, Germany, Dec. 25, 1824, died at the home of his son, Nov. 24, 1901, aged 76 years, 10 months, and 29 days.

He came to America in 1852, was united in marriage to Margaret Jokers July 30, 1854, in Boston, Mass. To them were born two children, John, of this place and Mrs. W.B. Knodt of Hartford, S.D. who still survive him, his wife having passed away a number of years ago, since which time he has made his home at the several different places, Louisville, Ky., Petersburg, Va., Dubuque, Ia. and the last five years at the National Home of disabled veterans at Milwaukee, Wis.

He has been in failing health since May, and on the 21st of October his son received a telegram saying "Come at once, I want to get back home among my own people." Since this time he gradually kept failing until Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
