Gabe Pederson, Active Citizen, Is Dead At 88.

Waterville- Funeral services were held at Waterville Lutheran church Monday, May 17 for Gabe Pederson, 88, retired postmaster, station agent, , and merchant, who passed away May 14, after a lingering illness. Interment was at Waterville cemetery May 17, the national holiday or Independence day of Norway, his native country. Rev. Haugstul officiated. Pallbearers were sons and grandsons of Mr. Pederson. Music was furnished by the Waterville choir.

Peder Gabriel Pederson was born in Honefoss, Norway, June 06, 1865. He was the son of Andrew and Karen Pederson. He came to this country in 1881 at the age of 16 and settled in Waterville where he remained for the rest of his life with exception of a few years spent in Montana.

He was married in 1895 to Ida Bryson of Waterville vicinity. She remains.

The Pedersons had seven children, five boys and two girls; Alfred and Rolf, Chicago; Victor, San Francisco; John, Waterville; Ruth, now Mrs. J. K. McWilliams, San Francisco; Alice, now Mrs. H. Haehlen of Waukon. A son Lester passed away at the age of two. Other relatives whom he leaves are three sisters, Mrs Karen Anderson, Denver; Olga, living in Norway, and Martha, living in Sweden. Four brothers preceded him : Alfred and Arne in California, Christian in Seattle, and John in Norway. There are 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

An Active Life.

Gabe Pederson was well known in his adopted home county and spent a great deal of time in civic work of various kinds. He was engaged in the mercantile business in Waterville and served as station agent and postmaster for many years.

Busy as he was, Mr. Pederson always found time for community interests, and was so active in supporting the civic athletic program that he was given a letter by the Waterville schools' athletic department.

He was influentual in prompting the consolidation of the Waterville school system, in getting the new gymnasium, and in many other ways, and served as president of the Parent=Teachers association for many years. He was also interested in the Boy Scout movement.

Mr. Pederson was a member of the Waterville Lutheran church, Modern Woodmen of America and the Masonic order.

Among those who came from out-of-town to attend the funeral were: Mrs. J. K. McWilliams of San Francisco; Rolf Pederson, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Pederson and Mrs. G. T. Gregory of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pederson and family, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Pederson and family, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Delver Johnson and family of Monona; Mr. and Mrs. Arne Stensrud of Minneapolis, Minn., and others.
