Lillie L. Martens, 99, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and formerly of Oelwein, Iowa passed away on Wednesday morning, May 14, 2003 at the Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa after a brief illness. Funeral services were held on May 19, 2003, at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein with Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating. Burial was at Floral Hills Cemetery at Hazleton, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established in her name. Lillie Martens is survived by 3 daughters, Eulalia Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Nina Mayor (Loren) McCallister of Marion, and Ileta (Curtis) Faldet of Decorah; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; and 10 great great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws Corrine Heins of Lacrosse, WI, and Margot Martens of Robins, IA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester C. Martens, on June 19, 1979; a son Palmer F. Martens; 5 brothers, Victor, Elmer, Louis Jr., Lester and Virgil; one granddaughter, Kristi Kroymann; one grandson, Douglas Johnson; and two sisters, Ruby Heins and Esther Eberling. Lillie Louise Heins was born on November 26, 1903 at Postville, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Louise (Meiske) Heins. She married Lester C. Martens on February 17, 1925 at Postville, Iowa. Lillie was a homemaker and also did housework for others after her children had grown. She lived in Oelwein for many years and moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in October of 1992 to live with her daughter. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Women's Relief Corp with whom she sewed many items for patients at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Lillie liked crafts, quilting, gardening, and flowers of bright colors. She had been a resident of Northbrook Manor Care Center since November of 2001.
