MARTIN, GALLAGHER, GRACE, MCCORMICK

The death of Mrs. James Martin, 92, former well known and highly esteemed resident of Hanover township, occurred Thursday at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, following an extended illness.

She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.J. Gallagher and was born at Dunkirk, N.Y., April 29, 1852. Coming to Iowa with her parents when a young girl they settled in Hanover township where after attaining womanhood she was wedded to James F. Martin. Following their marriage they resided in this vicinity, also at Lincoln, Neb., and Minneapolis. Mr. Martin died in 1917 and later his widow went to Key West, near Dubuque, and had since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. John Grace.

Surviving are six children, four sons and two daughters, namely: The Very Rev. M. J. Martin, Leo Martin, sheriff of Dubuque county, Francis Martin, Mrs. Michael McCormick, Dubuque, Mrs. John Grace, Key West and John, Minneapolis. There are 18 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. Joseph's church, Key West, after which the remains were brought to St. Mary's church, Hanover township, where services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. P. Reynolds. Burial took place in the nearby cemetery. Rev Martin officiating at the graveside services. A number of priests from this and nearby parishes were in attendance. The pall bearers consisted of Mike Burke, Larry Byrnes, Mike Devitt, P.J. Mahoney, Vic Zoll and Joe Dixon.

Relatives from a distance in attendance were Rev. M.J. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Martin and three children, Mrs. Michael McCormick and five daughters and Francis Martin all of Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. John Grace, Key West and Mr. and Mrs. John Martin Minneapolis.

Mrs. Martin was a remarkable woman for one of her advanced years. She retained her keen mind and a remarkable memory to the close of life, and was highly regarded and greatly beloved not only by her immediate family but by all who formed her acquanitance.
