Funeral services for Walter "Wally" Fredrick Zimmerman, age 76, of Waukon, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 10 at Zion United Church of Christ with the Rev. Richard Eick officiating. Burial, with graveside military rites, was in the Oakland Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Roman Koenings, Ray Burke, Dave Stangeland, Charles Bakke, George Colthurst, and Wayne Kreitzer.

Walter Fredrick Zimmerman, son of William and Christina (Schellhammer) Zimmerman, was born August 31, 1921 on the Lansing Ridge farm of his parents. His mother died on February 5, 1927 and his father married Mrs. Anna Wild. He attended rural elementary school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1941. After graduating from high school, he worked for several area farmers before joining the U.S. Army in 1944. He served in the Army Air Force until November 1945. On June 15, 1952, Wally married Sally Sharp at the Methodist Church in Decorah, Iowa.

Wally worked many different places including being a salesman in Washington D.C., a clerk for Harry Theis Clothing at Riceville, Iowa and B & B Clothing in Waukon. For over ten years, he was an insurance agent and financial advisor for Life Investors Insurance Company of America. He was cited often for his high production. Wally was a longtime member of Zion United Church of Christ, the American Legion, and several professional insurance organizations. Wally enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, big band music, playing cards, traveling, and going to his cabin at the Mississippi River. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. Wally enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in all their activities.

Walter Fredrick Zimmerman died Friday, February 6, 1998 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, and his brother Herbert Zimmerman.

Wally is survived by his wife Sally; 4 sons, David (Jeannine) Zimmerman of Waukon, Iowa, Brian (Julie) Zimmerman of Hiawatha, Iowa, Gary (Susan) Zimmerman of Orinda, California, and Todd (Teresa) of Naples, Florida; 7 grandchildren, John, Kristina, Kelsey, Maria, Kyle, William, and Jamie; 2 sisters, Sylvia (Charles) Bakke, of Waukon, Iowa, and Esther Humphries of Alexandria, Florida, a half sister, Shirley (Wilbur) Rose of Waukon, Iowa, and 4 step-sisters, Arlene Rooney, Ora Bell "Betty" Wild, and Eleanor Mouw, all of Waukon, Iowa, and Sylvia Hayes of Sun City, Arizona; and a step-brother, Milton "Mit" (Genevieve) Wild of Lansing, Iowa.
