Service Held for H. Cowell

Funeral services for Harley Cowell, 86, were held Monday, Oct. 8, 1984 at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. The Rev. Reuben Tjaden officiated with the message given by Verdon Swenson. Schutte Funeral Service, Postville, was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Harley Dewey Cowell, son of Thomas and Anne (Neucomb) Cowell, was born Sept. 26, 1898 in Franklin township, Allamakee County. He died at his home in Postville Friday, Oct. 5.

He attended the Big Foot School in Allamakee county. March 1, 1928 he was married to Thelma Powell. To this union five children were born. They farmed for many years and he also did butchering and sheared sheep. In 1942 he worked in the defense plant at Baraboo, WI.

For seven years he hauled milk for the Volney Cheese Factory. After moving to Postville, Harley was employed by the meat packing plant until his retirement in 1964.

Harley was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dewey Edward, two brothers in infancy, Sam and Otis, and a brother, Joe, and four sisters, Sarah (Mrs. Del Rose), Ethel (Mrs. Ben Kolowinski), Etta (Mrs. Frank Klees) and Sybil (Mrs. Rufus Seitz).

Surviving are his wife, Thelma, two sons, James, McGregor and Donald, Clermont, two daughters, Ethel (Mrs. Lawrence Odegard), Cashton, WI and Ruby (Mrs. Arlo Klein), Cedar Rapids, a brother, Dave Cowell, Monona, 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
