Funeral services for George Alan Smith, age 95, of Monona, Iowa, were held at the Garden City United Methodist Church in Monona, Iowa. Rev. Dennis Gilbert conducted the 10:30 a.m. services. Burial was in the Smithfield Cemetery, Volney, Iowa with arrangements by the Schultz Funeral Home in Monona, Iowa. Casket bearers were Lloyd Lamborn, Bill Moses, Everett Bollman, Lawrence Powell, Dennis Schlitter, Bennie Dahlstrom, Roger Miller, and Harva Oelberg. Honorary bearers were Eldred Schlitter, Freddy Miller, Dick Hagensick, Lloyd Johanningmeier, Willis Johanningmeier, Verna Johanningmeier, Karen Palmer, Arlene Rude, Dolores Fette, Kris Sass, June and Orville Nuehring, Joe and Mae Bakke, Jim Sanderson, Ralph Campbell, Wayne Chamberlain, Andy Wold, and Cliff Starkey.

George Alan Smith, son of Ira and Marian (Powell) Smith, was born August 3, 1903 in Allamakee County. He attended the Little Red School up to the third grade when he was needed at home to help with farm work. On May 20, 1924 he married Ruth Henderson in Waukon, Iowa. George was a farmer all of his life.

George Alan Smith died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth, who died June 14, 1990; an infant daughter; a granddaughter; a sister, Lura Smith; 3 brothers, Roy Smith, Lee Smith, and a brother who died in infancy.

George is survived by 2 daughters, George Kruse of Ames, Iowa and Mary Miller-Jackman of Monona, Iowa; 3 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Viola Kaufman of Murriels Inlet, South Carolina; and 2 sisters-in-law, Mabel Henderson of Cross Plains, Wisconsin, and Marion Cooper of Waukon, Iowa.
