Funeral services for Pearl Isabel Hartley, age 76, of Waukon, Iowa were held Tuesday, August 7 at 1 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa with the Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery. Casket bearers were her children and honorary casketbearers were her grandchildren Kris Burk, Tim Quandt, Tom Swenson, Julie Swenson, Bob Swenson, Jason Swenson, Brian Swenson, and Nick Swenson.

Pearl Isabel, daughter of DeForest and Isabel (Cree) Brown, was born March 11, 1925 in Massena, New York. She attended school in upstate New York through tenth grade and received her GED later at the age of 40. In 1946 she married Otis Swenson in Helena, New York. They moved to Allamakee County where they farmed together for many years while Pearl raised the children and worked as a switchboard operator and nurses aide at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. She and Otis were later divorced.

Pearl worked for a number of years as the activity director at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon where she initiated the Candy Striper program. On March 25, 1977, Pearl married Robert G. Hartley in the First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, Iowa. She continued working as a nurses aide at Northgate Care Center in Waukon and as program coordinator for the Northland Agency on Aging. She also helped to coordinate the USDA Commodity Distribution Program and Meals on Wheels in Allamakee County.

Pearl was a 4-H Leader for nine years, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Women's Civic Club, Allamakee County Farm Bureau Women, Allamakee Community Players, and an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon, member of the Christian Education Board, and in Presbyterian Women. She was an accomplished seamstress and liked to do handiwork and crocheting. Pearl enjoyed bowling, square dancing, playing cards, and bingo. She also liked to travel and spent several winters with Robert near Brownsville, Texas.

Pearl Isabel Hartley died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Otis Swenson and Robert Hartley, two brothers, Raymond Brown and Leon Brown, and two sisters, Ola Brown and Olive Brown.

She is survived by her 2 daughters, Nancy Swenson of Seattle, Washington and Linda Swenson of Iowa City, Iowa; 3 sons, Robert (Karen) Swenson and Lou (Rita) Swenson, both of Waukon, Iowa, and Norbert (Cathy) Swenson of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; a step-daughter, Janice Hartley of Lansing, Iowa; a step-son, Robert (Linda) Hartley of Waukon, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 step-great grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Joan) Brown of Highland, New York; a sister, Betty Jacobs of Oka, Quebec; and a sister-in-law, Helen Brown of Winthrop, New York.
