Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for former Allamakee County resident, Donald J. McMillan, age 68, of Fort Worth, Texas were held Monday October 3 at Shannon Funeral Home in River Oaks. Burial was in the Greenwood Park Cemetery.
Donald J. McMillan, son of William and Florence Edna Hawkins, was born April 4, 1920, near Rossville, Iowa. He attended the Rossville school and graduated from the Waukon High School. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector for 32 years before retiring. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Post No. 626.
Donald J. McMillan died from cancer on October 1, 1988 at his home in Fort Worth, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marguerite McMillan, and a brother Carlyle McMillan.
Donald is survived by his wife Ethelda; a son Donald McMillan, Jr.; 2 daughters, Jane Portman and Donna Marguerite McMillan; and 9 grandchildren, all of Texas.
Note of the transcriber: Donald's sister, Marguerite McMillan, was one of 7 young people who drowned in the Mississippi River on February 23, 1941 in a tragic accident when their car broke through the frozen ice, after missing their turn to go across the bridge at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin to go back to Iowa.
