Funeral services for Donald Nelson Schon, age 72, of Waukon, Iowa were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, was in Oakland Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Russ Roth, Jeff Schon, Paul Promnitz, Roger Ericson, Jay Schon, Bruce Meader, Larry Gelo, and John Ahlstrom.

Donald Nelson Schon was born January 31, 1926 in Waukon, Iowa to John and Hazel (Shogren) Schon. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1942 and served in the military as a Seaman 2nd class in the US Navy. On July 27, 1948 he married Barbara Sample in Hedrick, Iowa. They lived in California where he worked at the China Lake Naval Ordinance Testing Station for eight years. In 1956 they moved back to Waukon where they have lived since. In 1986 Don retired from the US Post Office, after 41 years in Federal Civil Service. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Don was also a member of the Allamakee Athletic Booster Club, Disabled American Vets, American Legion and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Donald Nelson Schon died Thursday, March 12, 1998 at St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Harold Herman.

Donald is survived by his wife, Barbara; 3 daughters, Janis (Larry) Fennern of San Jose, California, Jean Schon of Tacoma, Washington, and Joan (Preston) Brawner of LaFayette, Colorado; 2 sons, David (Jean Ann) Schon of Waukon, Iowa and Dale (Linda) Schon of Robins, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Herman, and a brother, Ralph (Jean) Schon, all of Waukon, Iowa.
