Virgil V. Kugel 1940-2004

Funeral services for Virgil Kugel were held Saturday, September 11 at the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church in Frankville, with the Reverend James Walker officiating. Darlene Winkie was the organist. Burial with military honors was in the Frankville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Virgil Vernon Kugel was born March 5, 1940, in Postville, Iowa, to Robert Henry Kugel and Arlene Margaret (Duvel) Kugel. He passed away September 8, 2004, in the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital at Decorah, Iowa. He had reached the age of 64 years. Virgil was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville, where he was a member. He served as treasurer of the Sunday School and helped to locate and cut the Christmas tree for the church for several years.

He graduated from Waukon High School in 1958. Virgil served in the US Navy during the Vietnam war. He was also stationed in Alaska and the Philippines. Following his military service, Virgil was employed in construction, beginning with Holland Brothers and then was with Reilly Construction Company for 30 years, where he operated a bulldozer. He was a member of the Frankville Fire Department for over 12 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Edward Robert Kugel, who died October 12, 1978. Surviving is a sister, Dianna and her husband, Roger Dickson, of Freeport, Illinois. Virgil was well known in the Frankville community and will be missed by his many friends and neighbors. Casketbearers were the Frankville Fire Department.
