E. Paul Reher 1915-2004

E. Paul Reher, 89, of Dyersville, Iowa, and formerly of Waukon, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at 9:30 a.m. at Mercy Medical Center in Dyersville.

Services were held Saturday, June 26 at Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville with Rev. Terri Elder officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Dyersville. Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Reher was born June 6, 1915, in Langdon, N.D., son of Fred J. and Marie Ann (Graber) Reher. He received his bachelor's degree from the City State College in Valley City, N.D., his master's degree in education from the University of North Dakota, and further studied at the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Margaret I. Kvilvang on June 6, 1938 in Valley City, N.D. They enjoyed 64 years together. Paul served the schools of Absaraka and Chaffee in North Dakota as band director, athletic coach, and principal of each before moving to Iowa in 1940, where he served as Superintendent of Schools in Waterville, Lansing, Parkersburg, and Waukon.

During his 25 years at Waukon he served on the executive board of the Iowa Association of School Administrators for six years, and as president of the organization in the 1969-70 school year, on the Advisory Council-Coordinating Committee of the Iowa State Department of education for seven years, two terms as chairman of the Iowa Education Conference Board, and various local and area professional organizations. One of the highlights of his service in Waukon was the formation of the Allamakee Community School District.

Paul was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and the Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed traveling, photography, woodworking, and outdoor sports such as fishing, hunting, and camping.

He is survived by three children, Carole Jean Reher of Maple Grove, Minn., Patricia Kay (Tom) Snyder of Dyersville, and Richard Alan (Karen) Reher of Custer, Mich.; three grandsons, Christopher Reher of Chico, Calif., David Snyder of Des Moines, Iowa, and Brian Snyder of Dyersville; and one sister, Lorraine (George) Worle of Prior Lake, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret I. Reher on April 2, 2003; one brother, Arnold Reher; and one sister, Lillian. Casketbearers were Russ Reicher, John Steger, Brian Snyder, Dave Snyder, Brian Hartbecke, and James Bonert.
