Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Durwood Schutta, age 87, of Mesa, Arizona, died July 31, 2011 at Springdale West Rehab Center in Mesa, Arizona. He suffered several mini strokes in March and was in the rehab center since April 24. Graveside services will be held soon at the National Cemetery in North Phoenix and a celebration of Life Service at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Mesa will be held later in the year.
Durwood was born in Postville, Iowa, Allamakee County on December 29, 1923 to Herman and Sevena (Sawvelle) Schutta. He lived in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin from 1930 until 1936 when he returned to Postville. He graduated from the Postville High School in 1941. After graduation he worked as a relief depot agent in various depots before entering the Army in 1943. After being honorably discharged in 1946 he worked for Hanson & Matson for several years. On September 26, 1954, Durwood married Donna Helming. One son was born to them in 1958. Durwood was the owner of Schutta's Shoe Store in Postville, Iowa, where the POSTVILLE HERALD is currently located, from 1953 until he retired in 1985. Durwood was a member and past president of the Postville Kiwanis Club, Commercial Club, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church Council. He sang in a church choir since he was in Junior High. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville and an associate member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Mesa, Arizona. After retiring in 1985, he and Donna spent several winters in Mesa, Arizona before becoming permanent residents there in 1993. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends.
Durwood was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Donna and son, Joel (Margaret) Schutta, one sister-in-law, Alice Huffman, one niece Jean Ann Krueger and one nephew Paul Huffman.
