Funeral services for Gary Alan Smerud, age 22, of Waukon, Iowa were held Tuesday, May 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eitzen, Minnesota. Pastor Anthony Straseske officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia, Minnesota with Haugen-Roble Funeral Home of Caledonia, Minnesota in charge of arrangements.

A lifelong resident of Allamakee County, Gary was born April 20, 1968 in Caledonia, Minnesota to Donald and Alys (Heaney) Smerud. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1987. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and was an employee of Iowa Turkey Products in Postville, Iowa at the time of his death.

Gary Alan Smerud died Saturday, May 5, 1990 as the result of an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alys who died in 1988, a sister Jody Lynn Smerud, his paternal grandfather, Oscar Smerud, and his maternal grandfather, Dewey Heaney.

Surviving are his father, Donald Smerud of Waukon, Iowa; paternal grandmother, Clara D. Smerud, a resident of Thornton Manor in Lansing, Iowa *SEE NOTE BELOW* and his maternal grandmother, Lydia Heaney of Caledonia, Minnesota; 4 brothers, Jeffrey Smerud of Waukon, Iowa, Randall Smerud of New Albin, Iowa, Dale Smerud of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and Daniel Smerud of Jacksonville, Florida, and a sister, Lori Smerud of Waukon, Iowa.

NOTE: Gary's grandmother Clara D. Smerud died five days after Gary, on May 10, 1990.
