Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Minnie Bugenhagen were held Tuesday, May 27 at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, Iowa. The Rev. Ted Ager officiated. Schutte Funeral Service of Postville, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Duaine Davis, Romandus Gisleson, Michael Gisleson, Marvin Kruse, and Ronald Schrader.
Wilhelmine "Minnie" Caroline Frederike, daughter of Henry and Anna (Schutte) Blumhagen, was born December 15, 1899 on the home farm in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was baptized April 22, 1900 and confirmed April 5, 1914, both in the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. Minnie attended the Bloomfield District No. 10 (Blumhagen School) near her home. As a young girl, she worked for several families as a hired girl, helping with chores as well. Minnie was also a seamstress. She worked for her Aunt Sue (Schutte) Corson at the general store in LeRoy, Minesota for a short time.
On September 28, 1927 she was married to William Henry Bugenhagen at the home of her parents near Castalia, Iowa. They farmed south of the Luana School on the farm where William's grandfather had lived for 39 years. In 1967, they purchased a home in Luana, Iowa. Minnie moved to Postville in July of 1986 and she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in 1989. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa.
She passed away at Postville, Iowa. She was 97 years, 5 months, and 10 days old. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill, who died in 1985; 7 brothers, Carl Blumhagen, Louis Blumhagen, George Blumhagen, Arno Blumhagen, Lloyd Blumhagen, Alvin Blumhagen, and Henry Blumhagen; 2 sisters, Mabel Meyer and Elsie Meyer. Mabel was married to Harold Frederick Meyer and after she passed away, Harold married her sister, Elsie.
Surviving is one sister, Elda Blumhagen of Castalia, Iowa; 5 sisters-in-law, *NOTE: The obituary lists the husbands with the first 3 sisters-in-law although the husbands are deceased* Hazel (Arno) Blumhagen of Postville, Iowa, Agnes (Lloyd) Blumhagen of Castalia, Iowa, Alice (Alvin) Blumhagen of Waukon, Iowa, Irene Harnack of McGregor, Iowa, and Mabel Neilson of Luana, Iowa; 1 brother-in-law, Walter Bugenhagen of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews.
