Donald Joseph Ward, age 61, died of cancer Friday October 17, 1997 at his home in rural Dorchester, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 20 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester, Iowa with Father Henry Charipar officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon, Iowa with arrangements by Martin Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Reggie Schwartzhoff, Ryan Schwartzhoff, Dave Hoskins, Brett Anderson, Jim Hammel, and Joe Hammel.

Donald was born April 12, 1936 in rural Allamakee County, Iowa to Emmett and Marcella (Collins) Ward. He attended rural schools in the Hanover area and graduated in 1955 from St. Patrick's High School in Waukon, Iowa. On August 1, 1964 he married Mary Ann Schwartzhoff at St. Mary's Church in Dorchester, Iowa. Donald farmed in Allamakee County all his life and for more than 15 years, drove a school bus for the Allamakee Community School District. He was a member of St. Mary's Dorchester where he had been a member of the parish council and taught CCD. Donald was also a member of St. Matthew's Council of the Knights of Columbus and active in area CEW events at St. Patrick's. He was an active member of the Waukon Athletic Booster Club and had coached several youths' ball teams locally.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann; 2 daughters, Linda (James) Berntgen of Dubuque, Iowa and Christine Ward of Coralville, Iowa; 4 sons, Scott (Beverly) Anderson, John (Kelly) Ward, all of Marion, Iowa, Duane (Melissa) Anderson of St. James, Missouri, and Brian (Michelle) Ward of Naperville, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mary Jo (Ernie) Brevik of Ottawa, Illinois and Colleen (Ron) Bruns of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and a brother, Gary (Ramona) Ward of Waukon, Iowa.
