Grace Humphrey

Services were held Saturday, October 4 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Postville for Grace S. Humphrey who passed away at her home on October 1 at the age of 81.

Grace Sarah Cool, daughter of William Alexander Cool and Julia Hines Cool, was born December 11, 1888 in Waverly, Iowa. She attended the Waverly public schools from kindergarten through high school. She graduated from high school in 1906 and from Iowa State Teachers (now U. N. I.) at Cedar Falls in 1910. She taught in rural schools in Bremer County and high school in Sioux Center and Monona.

She was united in marriage to James Thoma Humphrey of Monona on September 24, 1913 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly. To this union six children were born. Twin daughters that died at birth; Howard Joseph, Lieutenant in the Air Force, died on March 23, 1944 while serving as navigator on a B17 over Germany, and Margaret Grace who died of polio at the age of nine in 1940.

Surviving are Mary Hope Sawyer of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Donald James Humphrey of Kingston, Ohio. Also eight grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Joe A. Hoyt of Emmetsburg.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Humphrey had been a member of St. Bridget's Parish since 1925 and of St. Bridget's Rosary Society and St. Theresa Circle.

She had served a term as president of the ACCW of the Ossian Deanery and on the Board of the Postville Public Library and was it's president for nearly 30 years before poor health compelled her to resign.

Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Monona.
