Martha Friederike Schellhammer, age 84, of Waukon, Iowa died Thursday, February 1, 1990 at the Good Samaritan Center where she had been a resident since July 1985. Services were held Monday, February 5 at Zion United Church of Christ with the Rev. Henry Heinbuch conducting the 11 a.m. services. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Jeff and Steve Mitchell, William Little, Herbert Rissman, Willard Verthein, and Randy Rissman.

Martha was born October 10, 1905 in Grossenwieden, Germany to Karl and Freda (Hechler) Vieth. At the age of 19, she came to the United States on February 22, 1925. On May 5, 1925 she married John G. Schellhammer at Churchtown, Iowa in Allamakee County. They farmed near Lansing, Iowa until 1947 when they moved to the Glenwood area where they farmed. They moved to Waukon, Iowa in November 1959 when they retired from farming. She baked and decorated wedding cakes for many years. She was a member of Zion UCC and its women's organizations, Veterans Memorial Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens of Waukon, Iowa.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, John, who died April 20, 1989, two brothers, Karl Vieth and William Vieth, and a sister, Sophie Rissman.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Helga (John) Lenz of Payson, Arizona, Frieda (Gene) Riley of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Lorraine (Ray) Mitchell of Rossville, Iowa; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

NOTE: Martha was the best wedding cake maker! Her specialty was angel food cake and always beautifully decorated! She was always willing to meet the challenging requests of the young brides who wanted heart shaped cakes, bridges, fountains, tiers, etc. Her cakes could have gone up against any fancy cake featured in the Brides magazines of today.
