Clayton “Neal” Palmer, 81, of Waukon died Sunday, April 17, 2011 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Richard Iles officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 22 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Clayton Neal Palmer was born May 13, 1929 in Waukon, the son of Everett and Laura (Flage) Palmer. He attended school in Waterville. Neal worked on the railroad in the Waterville area before entering the U.S. Navy in 1950. He served during the Korean War and was discharged in 1954. December 18, 1954 he married Shirley Mae Brooks at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon. Neal worked for PALCO Manufacturing as a sales representative for several years. Starting in the late 1950s, he and Shirley worked at the Rainbow Gardens Ballroom in Waterville with his parents. Later, Neal and Shirley owned and operated Rainbow Inn, also in Waterville.
Neal was a member of the Harpers Ferry American Legion. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors fishing, hunting for ginseng, mushrooms and coon. Some of Neal’s other activities in the outdoors would include trips to Montana to hunt elk, snowmobiling, taking trips through Yellow River Forest and training coon hounds. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his children, Debra Harmening of Winona, MN, Terri (Wilbur Kollmann) Palmer of Harpers Ferry, Kathy (Paul) Benda of Waukon, Kenny (Donna) Palmer and Dave (Betty) Palmer of Harpers Ferry, and Sandy (Danny Stocks) Jones of Evansdale; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley Palmer of Waukon and Allan (Pat) Palmer of Volney; two sisters, Joan (Richard) Leiran of Waukon and Judy (Chuck) Hastert of Green Bay, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley, who died in 2007; a grandson, Joshua Palmer; and a brother, Curtis Palmer.
Honorary casketbearers are Colene Troendle-Mertz, Bonnie Palmer, Jessie Sweeney and Laura Valentine. Casketbearers are Kyle Troendle, Kadin Harmening, Levi Palmer, Jimmy Valentine, Billy Valentine, and Matt and Mark Benda.The Waukon Standard, April 20, 2011
