Ove Storla
Ove J. Storla, 96, of Dubuque died Friday, April 15, 2011 at home. Funeral services were held Monday, April 18 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Dubuque. Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Dubuque.
Ove Julius Storla was born February 3, 1915 to Ole O. and Hilda Julia (Paulson) Storla on the family farm in Allamakee County/Paint Creek Township. He was baptized and confirmed at the Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church near Waterville and was the youngest of nine children.
December 19, 1940, he married Mildred Lucille Johnson of Waukon. They were parents of three children, DuWayne, Carol and Curtis. He and Mildred moved to Dubuque in 1941. Ove worked at Farley & Loetscher Company, doing woodworking and mill work. During WWII, he made military ammunitions. He was employed there from 1941 to 1962, then Carr-Adco, followed by Flexsteel Company from 1964 to 1981 until his retirement.
Ove, Mildred and family attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque since 1941. For many years, Ove was a frequent walker and member of Kennedy Mall Walker’s Club. After retirement, six months of every year were spent in Harpers Ferry, where they had a summer home, their fishing boat, garden, flowers and spent many happy times fishing and entertaining family and friends, always with a lot of fun, relaxation and good times.
Ove enjoyed life and he was a very caring and helpful man - kind and had a great sense of humor. He was always helping others and was a wonderful role model for his children and grandchildren. Old-time dancing, fishing, gardening, playing cards and woodworking were some of his interests.
He is survived by his children, DuWayne Storla and friend Flora Wang of Dickeyville, WI, Carol Ann Storla of LaCrosse, WI and Curtis (Diane) Storla of Harpers Ferry; his grandchildren, Kevin (Cathy) Storla, Lisa (Mark) Henik, Cary Storla, Bradley Ruosch, Monica Bakalars, Debra (Frank) Meyer, Tammy (Dean) Hartlep, Tara (John) Guerdt and Tim Accola; step-grandchildren, Ron (Nonna) Goin and Jason (Tracy) Goin; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and “adopted” son, Steven Cue.
Ove was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Julia Storla; his loving wife Mildred, who is sadly missed; his brothers, Tory, Olvin and Clarence Storla; and his sisters, Sophia Gulrud, Thora Johnson, Pauline Johnson, Helen Storla and Olga Wendel.
