Sandra Mae Eberling
Sandra "Sandy" Mae Eberling, 68, Postville, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. She was born March 6, 1943, in West Union, Iowa, to Leon and Rose (Elliot) Shepard. She was baptized in St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa, and confirmed there in 1956. Sandra attended elementary school at Elgin and graduated from the Valley High School in 1961. Following graduation she was employed as a Nurses Aid at Community Memorial Hospital in Postville, Iowa. She was also employed at the Child Care Center.
On May 19, 1963, Sandra was married to Loren Lee Eberling in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Elgin. To this union two children were born, Martin and Dana. Loren and Sandy were foster parents to 10 children as well. While Loren was serving the U.S. Army the couple lived in Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, from 1964 to 1965. They moved back to the Postville area in 1965 and in 1966, they moved to the family farm. While on the farm, Sandy sold seed corn, helped Loren with the chores, enjoyed raising chickens, selling roosters and tending to her garden. Loren and Sandy then moved into Postville, in 1995.
During her lifetime, Sandy spent many hours working as a volunteer. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and of the Women of WELCA. She has served as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher for many years. She was also a foster grandma. Sandy loved her dogs, Buffy and Annie, and enjoyed her walks with them. She loved music and attended many of the shows at the boat. She enjoyed her many trips to Branson, MO, to listen to her beloved Danny O'Donnell sing.
Survivors include her husband, Loren Lee Eberling, Postville; one son, Martin Lee (Cindi) Eberling Sr., Waseca, MN; seven grandchildren, Martin Lee Eberling Jr., Samantha Jo Eberling, Robert Gerald Eberling, Jerilyn Ellen Eberling, Alicia Medina, Ricky Medina, McKenize Paige Knish; one brother, Harold (Emily) Shepard, Owasso, OK and one sister, Dixie (Charles) Valosio, Falls Church, VA.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Rose Shepard; one daughter, Dana Elaine Eberling and her father and mother-in-law, Eli and Esther Eberling.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Steve Brackett will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Postville Cemetery in Postville, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011, from 3-7 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Postville, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.
