Ray Hammell, age 84, of Lansing, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with his nephew, Fr. Jerry Blake, officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing. Friends may call Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing between 4 and 8 p.m. Thursday. There will be a Parish Scripture Service at 8 p.m.
Ray was born in Sand Cove, rural New Albin, on June 21, 1918, to Cornelius and Mary "May" (Wall) Hammell. On November 10, 1943, he was united in marriage to Margaret Troendle at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing. He later married Doris "Judy" May on April 15, 1978, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. For many years, Ray farmed in rural Lansing and did road construction for Highway Surfacers of New Hampton. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters since age 16 and a member of the Mississippi River Valley Sportsmans Club for several years. Ray loved vegetable gardening, fishing, and driving out to Sand Cove where he grew up. These last years, he cracked a lot of walnuts and pecans for everyone. Survivors include his wife, Doris, of Lansing; ten children, Kenneth (Hazel) Hammell of Wapello, Iowa, Carolyn Kukes of Lansing, Dorothy Schwartzhoff of Lansing, Shirley (Mike) Fink of New Albin, Kathryn "Kay" (Joe) Colvin of Fort Schott, Kansas, Mark (Renee) Hammell of Lansing, Roger (Cindy) Hammell of Lansing, Mary (Craig) Sand of Lansing, Elizabeth "Betsy" Fish of Olympia, Wash., and Gerald "Jerry" (Deb) Hammell of La Crosse, Wis.; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Hammell of La Crosse, Wis.; 35 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter (Betty) Hammell of Caledonia, Minn.; three sisters, Mary (John) Blake of Waukon, Agnes (Cyril) Troendle of Spring Grove, Minn., and Margaret (Pat) Blake of Dorchester; an aunt, Mrs. Dan (Betty) Wall of Florida; his wife Judy's children, Lois (Dave) Homewood of Dyersville, Stan Larson of Lansing, June (Cy) Livingood of Frankville, Dan (Sharon) Larson of Upland Crest, Minn., David Larson of Lansing, Shari (Lee) Schiemann of Burlington, Wis., Ron Larson of Waukon, and Carl "Tyke" (Shadi) May Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 13 step-grandchildren; and 20 step-great-grandchildren. Ray was preceded in death by a son, Cornelius; a daughter, Virginia; two granddaughters; two sons-in-law, Thomas Schwartzhoff and William Erickson; two brothers, John Hammell (and wife Mary) and an infant brother; three brothers-in-law, John Blake, Cyril Troendle, and Patrick Blake; and a step-grandchild.
