Virginia R. Ferguson, 83, of Littleton, Colo., formerly of Salt Lake City and Roosevelt, Utah, and Waukon, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at the Living Care Center of Littleton. She was born Virginia Ruth Martin September 30, 1919, in Waukon, the daughter of Juan Willard and Clara Martha (Opfer) Martin. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Virginia graduated from Waukon High School in 1936, attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, and then moved to Utah.
On August 15, 1946, she married Mathew Armstrong Ferguson in Salt Lake City. She was an active volunteer in the Salt Lake area, in particular recording text books and novels for the blind for over twelve years. Two of her talking books are in the Library of Congress. In 1980, Virginia and Matt moved to an acreage near Roosevelt, Utah, where she served as the White Rocks area reporter for the Uintah Basin Newspaper out of Roosevelt. In 2000, they moved to Littleton, Colo., to be near family.Virginia was a well-known golfer in the state of Utah. While living in Salt Lake City, she was the Willow Creek Country Club women's champion for 16 consecutive years. She also enjoyed gardening and staying in touch with family and friends with frequent and detailed letters.Survivors include her husband, Mathew of Littleton; two sons, Bruce (Donna) Ferguson of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and their children Adrienne and Natalie, and Brian Ferguson of Mountain View, Calif.; a brother, Roger (Arlene) Martin of Waukon; and a sister, Barbara Burbank of Indianapolis, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents.Funeral services will be held Friday, May 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may greet the family for one hour before the service.
