Ordell held a deep love for Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member. Faith came first for Ordell and this was most evident through his many years of leadership and service throughout the congregation. He enjoyed the fraternal aspect of the business as this provided funds for many community projects. Ordell retired from Lutheran Brotherhood in 1998.
Ordell was passionate about music and sang in various groups during his high school years, the church choir, the Switzerland of IA Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus and enjoyed singing in a barbershop quartet for a number of years. Ordell was an avid believer in soil conservation. He started in this process while farming with his father in 1952 and continued it during his life. He and his son-in-law, Gregg Hoins, received the Overall Conservation Award and also the NE-IA District award. Ordell enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. He and Grace enjoyed their cabin in Harpers Ferry, where they entertained many family and friends through the years. Ordell was very proud of his 10 grandchildren and enjoyed attending their many activities.
