John Wiedner

John Martin Wiedner was born April 24, 1944 and passed away February 19, 2011 in Phoenix, AZ.
He was a graduate of Waukon High School, attended Loras College, and after being recruited into the U.S. Navy, served as a Submarine Nuclear Reactor Engineer on the USS Patrick Henry and USS Bergall. John left the Navy after seven years, achieving the Rate of Petty Officer, 1st Class.
His career encompassed both nuclear and solar energy technologies, and for the past 30 years John worked for Arizona Public Services in many capacities. The highlight of his career was working for the Solar Division where he helped develop a solar technology providing power for the village of San Juanico in Baja, Mexico.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril (Steve) and Mary Jane Wiedner of Waukon. John is survived by his wife, Victoria Thonvold; his children, Eric Wiedner of Highland, KS, Susan Wiedner of San Diego, CA, Wendy (Wiedner) Jenkins of Denver, CO, and Katherine Thonvold of Buenos Aires, Argentina; his grandchildren, Jacob Wiedner and Atticus Jenkins; family members, Donald Wiedner of Lakeville, MN, Stephen Wiedner of Waukon, Mary Wiedner of Minneapolis, MN, Elizabeth Hetzel of Whitesburg, GA, Richard Wiedner of Litchfield, MN, and David Wiedner of Cedar Rapids.
As an engineer, he tried to harness energy to create a safer and more efficient environment for everyone around him. As an avid photographer with a precise eye, he took unique photographs of nature which he exhibited for the enjoyment of others. His bright intellect and quick wit will be missed, but not forgotten.
