Joseph Magner

Joseph L. Magner, 84, of Elizabethtown, PA died Sunday, February 27, 2011. He was the husband of Ann M. (Spiro) Magner. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, March 7 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, PA. Interment and full military honors took place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
Joseph was born in Waukon and attended Waukon High School, graduating in 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation and served 30 years, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. During his time in the Navy, he served for a short time as a U.S. Navy recruiter in Decorah. He continued on to visit many ports across the world. After retiring from the military, Joseph was employed as food service manager for the Maryland School for the Blind and as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Joseph was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, PA. He enjoyed attending church, making leather goods, sports, horse racing and respected nature and animals. Joseph also enjoyed talking to people and helping others.
In addition to his wife, Ann, Joseph is survived by two daughters, Mary Malloy and Bernice Magner, both of Pennsylvania; a granddaughter, Amy Malloy, also of Pennsylvania; a sister, Jeanette Kilpatrick, and her husband, Tom, of Palo; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Magner of Cedar Rapids. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Emily and Leo Magner; and a brother, Emmet Magner.
